JJ Byars

JJ Byars, is an indie electric folk artist that embodies a lush, and dynamic style exploring soundscapes ranging from highly energetic, gritty, and rich electric guitars, soaring vocals, to soft and sensitive finger picking folk lamentations, all interweaving with a narrative theme of introspection, and nostalgia, touching on topics of love, loss, family, and impermanence.

Influenced by artists such as Grizzly Bear, John Fahey, and Jeff Buckley, JJ’s approach to songwriting is unique. “Waterlogged” is his solo album debut and first foray as a singer songwriter/composer under his own name. He comes from years of touring as a founding member and saxophone player for the successful soul rock band, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds. And has been an active sideman and bandleader in the NYC music scene for multiple projects. JJ studied at the acclaimed Berklee College of Music where he met Jonathan Smith, a gifted engineer and producer. Waterlogged is co produced by Jonathan and was recorded over the span of 3 weeks at a makeshift recording studio cabin in the vast woods of New Hampshire surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest.

After years of touring in other bands, playing large venues and festival circuits, JJ now focuses on this new solo venture. Over the last few months, a buzz has been building in the NYC area and beyond. He performs with a brilliant lineup of musicians that allows the nuances of this music to be explored and pushed to new heights.
